(Glen
Shriver)

The Chinese embassy in Washington refuted the
accusation, saying China "never engages itself in
activities that'll harm other countries' national
interests, and it's sincere in developing Sino-US
relations of mutual benefits, any attempts to defame
China with fabricated allegations will prove futile.

As a former international relations student at Grand
Valley State University, Shriver went to Shanghai to
study Chinese at East China Normal University from
2002 to 2003.
After graduating from Grand Valley in 2004, he
returned to Shanghai and responded to an
advertisement that was seeking someone to write a
political paper on Sino-US relations. That led
Chinese agents to recruit Shriver and encourage him
to secure a job with the US government so as to pass
classi-fied documents to the Chinese side, according
to the court.
In 2005 and 2006, Shriver took the foreign service
exams twice at the State Department in the US and
failed both times, but he was given $10,000 for his
first attempt and $20,000 for the second from
Chinese agents, the court documents said. He applied
for a job in the CIA's National Clandestine Service
in June 2007 and later traveled to China and
requested $40,000 from Chinese agents and got paid
in cash.
In December, Shriver received a CIA notice to report
in May for final employment processing in
Washington, DC. Prosecutors said Shriver lied on his
CIA application and in screening interviews, and
that he failed to disclose his contacts with the
Chinese and the money.
Li Wei, director of the Center for Counter-Terrorism
Studies at the China Institutes of Contemporary
International Rela-tions, has his doubts about the
spying accusations. "It is a one-sided story of a
man who confessed for a reduced punishment, advanced
technologies now facilitate policymakers in
governments in obtaining reliable and valuable
information. Therefore, spying seems to be less
crucial in acquiring vital information.”
As the midterm elections in the US approach, the spy
story will definitely draw people's attention to
China again, said Ni Feng, director of the Institute
of American Studies at the Chinese Academy of Social
Sciences. The incident is just another that irks the
US government, Ni said, also noting an ongoing
dispute over currency and trade with China. If the
Obama administration keeps being suspicious about
China, Sino-US relations will be troublesome.
